Post Twitch Asylum Video Game Radio Episode #8
Our eighth podcast is now available! Download it here.

In our "discussion" segment we talk about the concept of "abandonware". What is it? What are the legal issues related to it? and what does it mean to gamers?

During our "Retro Respect" segment, we take a look back at the history of id software. During the segment we discuss how John Romero and John Carmack got interested in programming, their time together at Softdisk, the development of their most popular game franchises (Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3-D, Doom, Quake), and the conflicts that ultimately pulled them apart.

Our "Gaming Moments" this episode include Moto GP (360), 2006 FIFA World Cup (360), Brain Age (DS), Mario Kart (DS), Doom III (PC), and Oblivion (PC).

In our look at the news we discuss the ability to emulate newer firmware versions on a 1.5 PSP, a couple of new comedy-based adventure games that use the Source engine, and the ability to play Zork over the phone.

I had heard the X-Men game was so-so. I will probably rent it to check it out though, I am in need of something a bit different on the 360. Man, these summer months are shaping up to be a bit bland. I guess the good news is that with the DS I will have a whole new library of games to discover...

Great job with the history of id. I can remember watching my uncle play Doom and thinking it was awesome. My friend and I would play Quake 2 non-stop.

The retro respect segment was really interesting. I haven't played any of those games because I don't like that style/type so I did not know the history behind them.

I will have to check out the commander keen stuff though.

Oh yeah mario 3 had the over head map screen so how could nintendo have stolen the idea from commander keen ?

Doh! You are completely right. For some reason I was thinking about Super Mario World not Mario 3. But, yeah, they definitely stole the idea from SM3. I feel so lame... Embarassed

I didn't know the history either until I read the book. Being a software engineer who has been in way too many startups, it is always interesting for me to hear how development teams start, how they deal with marketing, etc. Id seemed to be successful in spite of not having a real business sense. In a lot of ways they got lucky to hook up with Apogee and get into the Shareware market. But, I have a feeling if it wasn't Apogee, it would have been someone else, because they were doing truly innovative things at the time.

Great show... I loved the retro respect portion.

I had no idea shareware made that much money back then. Shocked

I played and loved just about every PC game that was mentioned... I guess I'm old. Sad

I would love to hear more about all the older game companies in future shows. Especially Origin... Wing Commander is one of the best games ever!!!

Anyway, keep up the great work...

I first started listening to podcasts a few months ago, I was listening to tons of shows and now I only listen to two... I won't mention the other but you guys are one of them. Wink

Someone beat my Hexic score so I can play it again!

Thanks for the comments! I'll have to work on that Hexic score. Right now I'm stuck on level 7 of Zuma, too, and need to finish that off. Origin / Wing Commander is a good idea for a show.
